SUMMARY:MN COLA September Membership Meeting - September 15
DESCRIPTION:We have two very important topics on the agenda: \n\nA highly effective AIS treatment option for zebra mussels that is getting ready to exit the research stage\nAn update on Sulfide mining in Minnesota\n\n \nResearchers from USGS and MAISRC have been leading the efforts on treating zebra mussel infestations with low doses of copper for many years and they are now exploring approaches to deploy the solution. It will be a key new arrow in our quiver for addressing a very vexing AIS animal species. \nMatt Barbour\, from the US Geological Service (USGS)\, is one of those key researchers and we are excited that he can join us to bring us up to date on this exciting research. \n \nThis battle over sulfide mining in Minnesota has been going on for years with industry announcements\, government actions and inactions\, lawsuits\, and more. One of the latest actions happened just last week with Governor Walz signing an executive order for “Enhancing Protection of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness”. The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) is one of the lead organizations fighting this battle for all of us and they know the current situation. \nAshlynn Kędzior\, an attorney from MCEA\, has been in the middle of the MCEA efforts to protect our Minnesota waters from the impacts of sulfide mining. We are thrilled to have her on the agenda. \nRegister here and look for an email from Zoom with your meeting link.
